Article abstract:
Abiotic stresses are the important limiting factors of growth and crop production. They have a crucial role in the ecological dispersion of plants. All living organisms, especially plants, have developed many different mechanisms on physiological, biochemical and molecular levels for the purpose of acclimatization to stresses. Ability to response under environmental stresses can be different among genotypes and even species within genus. This phenomenon needs a vast reprogramming of gene expression and its regulation is in part dependent on epigenetic modifications including alternations in histones and DNA methylation without any alteration in the base sequence. These modifications may cause an increase gene expression, synthesis and accumulation of tolerant factors in both transcriptional and posttranscriptional levels, genome reorganization and may or may not be heritable. These epigenetic changes alone or in cooperation with genetic modifications may involve in plant growth, development and response to environmental stress. Therefore, these pathways indicate plant efforts in survival to environmental changes. In this review, we summarized the significance of epigenetic alterations in abiotic stress responses in plants, and discussed the cooperation among their different classes and their interactions with stress induced changes.
